Gülizar Şenlikoğlu, 68 years old, came to Istanbul from Giresun, a city in the eastern Black Sea region. She learnt how to make corn bread from her mother when she was 13 years old. They used to bake corn bread on a circular stone (called pileki) in their village. They put the baking stone on the ash and covered it with cabbage leaves and ash. It was like an oven. Then stoves arrived and they used them to bake it. She remembers that corn bread was also used in the preparation of simple desserts like porridge. They mashed hot corn bread and mixed it with butter and grape molasses. It was one of the main desserts they ate in Giresun.
